When her family faces difficult times following the arrest of her father, she disguises herself and dawns the appearance of a boy in order to provide for her family in ways that a girl in Afghanistan can't.

While animated films have often tackled the "one gender disguises themselves as the other gender" plot line (such as in Disney's Mulan), The Breadwinner delves much deeper into this concept.

It charms you with unique characters, endearing interactions, and a budding romance. He formed a connection with the popular class president, who showed compassion towards him. It puts minimal effort into developing the plots and only focuses on the smut. As the storyline progresses, I begrudgingly admit the anime tackles more mature themes than expected. But what gay characters existed in shows aimed at kids were generally hidden, and their queerness only hinted at instead of confirmed.

Animation is too often seen as content made for kids, and same-sex attraction is regarded as an “adult” topic. Their friendship helps him heal from his shattered self-esteem.

Although not a BL anime, My New Boss Is Goofy has a heavily coded bromance. “The Owl House” (2020-2023)

The Titan's Bride (2020)

The Titan's Bride is an 18+ BL anime about an ordinary student magically summoned into the land of the titans.

“Steven Universe” (2013-2019)

Animation wasn’t exactly a queer wasteland before “Steven Universe” came to town. Much more egregious was the censorship of Sailor Scouts Haruka (Uranus) and Michiru (Neptune), out and proud lesbians in the Japanese version who were turned into cousins for the dub in a (failed) attempt to explain away their physical closeness.

Anime fans had seen hundreds of shows of its ilk premiere before: sports series (in this case, the sport is men’s figure skating) where the protagonist (anxious Japanese performer Yuri Katsuki) develops a blatantly homoerotic relationship with his best friend/rival/mentor (his new coach, Russian champion Viktor Nikiforov). You might not understand “Revolutionary Girl Utena” the first time you watch it, but the queer storytelling on display will undoubtedly resonate.
