The pair would often go sailing on his yacht and Thompson would even cut Bogart and Bacall’s children’s hair.
“She was part of the family in many ways.
Bacall knew about her. 'But I never get beyond the thinking stage. The relationship was romantic. Even with the emotional indiscretions … those last several months of Bogie’s life prove how much she loved him.”
Bogart passed away from the disease in 1957.

Thompson supposedly hoped that Bogart would one day propose to her after separating from Methot.

He died in 1957 at age 57. “He was crocked,” she revealed in her memoir By Myself.
“He just wanted to take care of [his wife], not little kids.” He eventually came around, and the duo went on to have “a very happy marriage, two children [Stephen and Leslie], a bunch of dogs, and a beautiful house.

In early 1956, Bogart was diagnosed with throat cancer, likely brought on by his heavy smoking and drinking.
Bacall never left his side and became his caregiver, to the point where she would even sit with him at the hospital and “[hold] the stitches together on his abdomen” when they came apart.
“She sleeps with him when he’s about 80 pounds, because he tells her, ‘Don’t leave me tonight.’ … Of course, she doesn’t sleep all night.
She succeeded, of course, and “Bogie was definitely the love of her life,” Mann asserts, “but it wasn’t always easy.”
The actors had a lot to overcome from the start: Bacall was just 19 when she met and costarred with Bogie — already on his third marriage — in 1944’s To Have and Have Not.
Now it has emerged that before marrying her in 1945, Bogie had bedded an estimated 1,000 women including Bette Davis, Jean Harlow, Marlene Dietrich and Ingrid Bergman - but still feared he might be gay.

The extraordinary claim is made in a new biography of the actor, best known for the movie Casablanca.
It suggests that during his second marriage to American stage and film actress Mary Philips, Bogart became riddled with uncertainty that made him impotent and question his sexuality - and even drove him to consider suicide.
The biography's author Darwin Porter, a journalist who worked in Hollywood in the 1960s, says Philips insisted on openly maintaining her previous relationships, even spending the night before their marriage in 1928 with a friend of Bogart's 'as a farewell gift'.
According to the unflattering new book, Bogart told another friend: 'If only Mary didn't make it worse.
“But in many ways, I think it was the most intense, emotional and intellectually stimulating relationship of her life,” Mann said.
