The Byrdcage in Atlantic City — What We Know

The Byrdcage's arrival into Atlantic City marks the city's first full-time LGBTQ nightlife space in nearly two decades!

"Perched in the heart of Atlantic City, ByrdCage is the ultimate destination for fabulous food, killer cocktails, and unforgettable vibes," the owners say in their marketing materials.

The bar, which is a gay-owned business, will be located in the University District of Atlantic City at 3426 Atlantic Avenue.

In the restaurant industry, he's franchised delis, worked as a consultant and created the former Bella Luna cafe at the Lucy the Elephant attraction in Margate.

Located in The Quarter at Tropicana, and named after the classic cocktail, that’s easy going and ultra-refreshing, Gin Rickey’s is equal parts cocktail lounge, live music bar, and good vibes.

While the name is a slight nod to the 1996 movie starring Robin Williams and Nathan Lane, the owner said it was a different film that gave him inspiration. There have been multiple gay nightclubs, including the Rainbow Room and Prohibition Bar, that were open over the past two decades. "I understand we're a bar and restaurant, but I also want it to be a place for resources for the youth and for anybody struggling, or just people that want to come be themselves or explore."

The ByrdCage will feature a piano lounge and restaurant on the first floor and entertainment space for drag events and theme nights on the second.

It was first a swingers bar called the RolePlay Lounge and then was the Jersey Shore outpost of Philadelphia's Good Dog Bar, which closed in August. This story has been updated.

The ByrdCage, which will be Atlantic City's first full-service queer bar and restaurant in 20 years when it opens in early January, has been a longtime dream of Jason Tell.
