Then came the oldest, Trevante Rhodes (as 'Black), whose muscular physicality only serves to expound the soft vulnerability of the man underneath. Initially wary of taking on what could have been a reductive, two-dimensional role of a drug-addicted Black woman, Harris was soon convinced by Jenkins' vision and the personal experience with which he was imbuing the film.

"You in the middle of the world." He is teaching Little how to swim. Kevin has moved on and he is happy, but he isn’t satisfied with how Black turned out. Rave reviews rolled in, as did award nominations, including eight at the 2017 Oscars. Certainly it has some really good things about it - the cinematography is beautiful, incredible performances from just about all of the cast, but the story?

This film will teach you how to feel, as director Barry Jenkins gently guides you through one of the most heartbreaking, moving and beautifully executed character studies in recent cinematic memory.

Moonlight first came into being as an unproduced play, titled 'In Moonlight, Black Boys Look Blue' and penned by Tarell Alvin McCraney back in 2003, after his mother passed away.

Every word is vital, and yet there is enough freedom and looseness to completely submerge you in Chiron's world. Even after moving to the USA, those feelings persisted. Just like Chiron, my environment and the expectations that came with it forced me to suppress crucial parts of myself.

Watching Moonlight, I suddenly felt represented.

The previous internalized identity that Juan worked to support was being destroyed.

Chiron is now going by the name “Black” in the third part, as Kevin had given him that nickname before they became intimate. He just needed to heal his inner child and love himself.

He did not retaliate towards Kevin despite Kevin being the one who attacked him directly.

Yet somehow this film managed to touch each one of these areas perfectly, and with the recognition from the Academy, it now holds a distinctive place in cinema history.

Through Moonlight, the gay storyline is told sincerely in its grand, intimate moments, as well as its twisted, melancholic ones.

Teenage Chiron was the trickiest to cast, with relative newcomer Ashton Sanders eventually slotting in.

For all the casting, money and time-related hurdles Jenkins had to overcome in bringing Moonlight to life, none are evidenced on screen.

What's so remarkable about the way these three actors captured one character so intensely is that they never observed each other's performances, a decision made by Jenkins early on.

After Chiron hears about Kevin getting in trouble for having sex with a girl at school, Kevin has a dream about it. Juan, the father figure, has a conversation with Little about the term, “faggot.” Juan explains that it is a word to make people who identify as gay feel bad about themselves. Mahershala Ali squeezed in his scenes as Little's father-figure Juan in-between stints working on Netflix's Luke Cage series.

Gay, Black, and Revolutionary: The Importance of 'Moonlight'

The latest Academy Award for Best Picture was earned by a film depicting the story of a poor, gay, black boy in South Florida. But alas, no. The story of this film resembles my own and a thousand more. I was an outsider. However, by allowing Little to hear a man he admires handle the topic maturely and with love, it creates a healthier internalized identity for Little.

In the second part, Little now uses his name, Chiron.
