Luke Bryan fell short of taking a definitive stand for equality in an interview published last week because he feared offending conservative country music fans.
The 44-year-old country star’s 2017 song “Most People Are Good” included the line “I believe you love who you love," – which was seen by many as a show of support for the LGBT community.
Bryan told the Chicago Tribune the lyric “can be taken a lot of ways.
That line, in particular, needs to be interpreted however the listener wants to interpret it."
He also explains that a lyric that can be unpacked in multiple ways, and reach multiple different kinds of listeners, is a sign of a well-written song: "I think it can help free up the Nashville community of songwriters to getting closer and closer to writing whatever they want," Bryan adds.
He told People, “Ten years with me feels like a thousand.” “It was the least I could do,” he said.
Luke Bryan Says He’s ‘Not Scared’ to Stand Up for His Beliefs
As a country music superstar, Luke Bryan has the potential to speak to, and influence, hundreds of thousands of fans, both through his music and his public words and actions.
"It’s a delicate conversation, and do I think we may take a little longer in country to have it? Luke told the Chicago Tribune in an interview that it makes him mad that he has to watch what he says when he writes songs.
One line in the song, “I believe you love who you love,” hinted that Luke is a supporter of the LGBT community.
He adds, "I'm always gonna walk a smart line, but I'm not scared."
The artist points to "Most People Are Good," his 2018 No. 1 single that features a diverse music video cast and the lines "I believe you love who you love / Ain't nothin' you should ever be ashamed of."
"That can be taken a lot of ways," Bryan reflects.
He said that the line “can be taken in many different ways.” He went on to say,
“A lot of people asked me, ‘Well, does that mean you want to put a flag and support the gay and lesbian community?’ I said, “I’m not saying I’ll go fly that flag, but I’m also not saying I won’t.”

Country music's audience is growing younger and more diverse, especially as out-of-genre collaborations become more popular and rap, hip-hop and other styles of music continue to influence the country sound.
